Blue Devils beat Ironton

COAL GROVE - Gallia Academy baseball started slow, but picked up speed as the night progressed Friday during a 15-6 victory over host Ironton in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League South Division matchup.

The Blue Devils (10-3, 6-2 SEOAL South) trailed 4-0 through three innings of play, then erupted for eight scores in the top of the fourth to turn a four-run deficit into a comfortable four-run edge.

GAHS - which pounded out 15 hits on the evening - tacked on three more scores in the fifth for an 11-4 lead, but the Fighting Tigers countered with a run in their half of the fourth to pull to within six at 11-5. IHS - which produced seven hits - never came closer the rest of the way.

Gallia Academy added three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to take a 15-5 edge, and Ironton plated one run in their final at-bat to conclude the contest at its nine-run outcome. Both teams committed two errors apiece in the contest.

Kyle Dingess led the Devils with four hits, followed by John Troester with three safeties and Terry Smith with two. Chuck Calvert, Caleb Warnimont, Ian Dressel, Tyler Eastman, Austin Roush and Beau Whaley also added a hit apiece to the winning cause. Warnimont had a team-high three RBIs.

Jeff White paced Ironton with two hits - both homers - and three RBIs.

Calvert was the winning pitcher of record, while Preston took the loss for Ironton. Calvert worked 5.1 innings on the mound in relief of Roush.

GAHS also left Jackson on Thursday night tied at five through nine innings, although the Blue Devils held a 4-1 cushion going into the bottom of the seventh. That game will be completed before next Wednesday\'s regularly-scheduled contest at Jackson.
