Runnin' Dogs participate in Division II Ottawa District Meet!

October 29, 2009
By Daniel Otten of Celina High School

Saturday morning the Celina Bulldog Harriers particpated in the OHSAA Division II Ottawa District Meet.  Thirteen schools took part in the D-II event, with hopes of advancing to next weekend's (Oct 31) Tiffin Regional Meet, a step away for the State Championship Meet on Nov 7 in Columbus.  In order to advance to Tiffin a team had to finish in the top four of the final standings.  Individuals placing in the top 16 would also advance to Regional if their team did not.

The cold blustery morning began with the D-II guys.  Andrew Goodwin (16:06) continued his winning ways as he took control of the race at the mid point and cruised to a twenty-two second victory.  The win earned him a spot at the Tiffin Regional.  The team competition was a little too tough for the young Bulldogs (1 sr, 1 jr, 2 so, 2 fr) as the group finished in 8th place, thus putting an end to the season from a 'team' aspect.  Chris Nusbaum was CHS's #2 runner as he crossed the line in 33rd place (18:38).  He was followed by Zach Mitchell's (19:11) 51st place, Peyton Jone's (19:22) 59th place, Jared Owen's (19:40) 64th place, and Andrew Huff's (21:29) 79th place.

The Runnin' Women had their best 'team' effort of the season, although they failed to advance to the Regional meet.  The Ladies finished 7th of a strong Division-II field.  Ashley Figel (20:10) headed the way with her individual 8th place result.  That placing earned her a trip to Tiffin on the 31st.  A trio of Lady Dogs ran close to season and career bests as Ashley Coon (21:40) was 32nd, Claire Schmitmeyer (21:41) took 33rd, and Katlin Robinson (21:55) 36th.  Celina's final scorer was Marissa Gibbons who ran a season best 22:26 to get 46th.  Holly Thobe (23:01, 59th) and Jamie Owens (23:59, 66th) rounded out the Celina seven.  Jamie, a senior, broke 24:00 for the first and only time of her career, in her final CC race.  As a freshman and sophomore Jamie was unable to break the 30:00 barrier.
